What is triple pelvic osteotomy?
Triple pelvic osteotomy (TPO) is an operation performed on medium and large breed dogs with early clinical hip dysplasia. The purpose of the procedure is to eliminate coxofemoral joint laxity, improve hip compliance and normalize stresses of the hip joint. This should help prevent or reduce the development of osteoarthritis. A TPO includes bone cuts in the pelvis so that the acetabulum portion of the joint can be rotated over the femoral head; the bones are then stabilized with a bone plate. Surgery helps ensure that the hip joint covers the femoral head better, which eliminates joint laxity.
